Worship
Contemporary Service
In the Christian Life Center at 9am - Sundays
In this worship service you'll find a praise team, video slides, and more current-style music that you might hear on Christian Radio stations. While this service is a little more casual in format and setting, you'll still hear many of the traditional liturgies and prayers of the church.
Sunday School
Sundays, 10-10:45am
Sunday School is available for all ages!
Nursery - Nursery Room, Sanctuary
Connected Kids - Education Building
Prism Youth Group - Youth Room, Christian Life Center
Christians Under Construction - Lounge, Christian Life Center
Connected Families - Education Building
Traditional Service
In the Sanctuary at 11:00 AM - Sundays
In this service we sing out of the United Methodist Hymnal, which contains the more traditional, older songs of the church, set to music that is more classical. While there's occasionally more contemporary music sprinkled in, you'll usually hear a choir, organ, and piano, and you'll be in a space with stained-glass windows and pews instead of a gymnasium with folding chairs.

When you come to worship at First UMC,
there are a few things you might want to know:
What should I wear?
People come to our church dressed in anything from shorts and a t-shirt to a suit and tie. There is no dress code. We focus on more important things around here.
What is the service like?
A typical 9am service will last about 45 minutes, and the 11am service will last about an hour. We value authenticity over production, because we believe that God is our audience, not the congregation. As a result, worship is a more personal and participatory experience here, and you'll find an atmosphere of conversation and community rather than "sit down and be quiet." We also celebrate Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month, and we invite all to receive the sacrament. We know that some parts of our service may be unfamiliar to you, so we try to give clear instructions when we're all doing something together, like Holy Communion. You an also always ask a neighbor if you don't know what to do next!
In the Contemporary Service, you'll be led by our Praise Team to more current styles of music, like you may hear on Christian Radio. We have refreshments available before & after this service and wonderful volunteers who provide them and will pour you a cup of coffee if you want!
During the Traditional Service, you'll be led by our choir and sing older songs from our Hymnal, usually accompanied by an organ and/or piano. We believe both are valid and good forms of worship, but they speak to different people differently, so we offer them both. Both services are built around the same theme and scripture, and you'll hear the same sermon in both services too.
Children are welcome at both our services, and there is a special "Children's Moment" toward the beginning of each service to teach them the lesson for the day in an age-appropriate way. After that, they may go to Children's Church during worship, or go back to sit with their families. We have a staffed nursery for the little ones who might need some more care. Please see Mrs. Holly or the Children's Ministry staff if you want to know more!
We look forward to your visit and hope you will find your new spiritual home with us.

Why should i give to my church?
Spiritual Reasoning
Jesus talked about the proper use of resources more than any other topic in the Gospels. The way we use our resources says a lot about our loyalty, and the depth of our discipleship. Jesus even said in Matthew 6:19-21 that "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." So why not invest in the heavenly type of treasure?!
Giving is a spiritual discipline just like prayer, reading your Bible, and worship attendance. The Biblical guideline in the Old Testament is a tithe, or 10% giving of one's income back to the church, or to some other work for God in the world. Living on 90% of your income is not harmful to most people, but it's large enough to remind yourself of the reason you are giving.
God owns it all in the first place.
We're just taking care of things while we're alive. We're all just stewards for our time on earth, and we may as well take care of God's stuff by doing some good with it while we are watching over it!
Practical Reasoning:
The church relies on your gifts to provide ministry and operate.
OK, let's be honest here: every local church is a not-for-profit corporation that is able to operate because of the financial gifts it receives. We have church staff & ministries they lead: the money for these comes from you. We give to the larger church around the state, country, and world so we can work together to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support missionaries, schools, Children's Homes, the United Negro College Fund, and an untold number of good things through our UMC Connection. We have air conditioning, lights to keep on and property to maintain, and we're able to have these things because of your financial gifts to the church. First UMC has an annual budget of around $500,000; so we all have a part to play in helping our ministries thrive and our needs to be addressed. We don't get any substantial income from any other source.
If you're a member, you promised to do it when you joined.
When we joined First UMC, whether it was in 2024 or 1924, we promised to support the church in several ways, among them being with our financial offerings. We made this promise to God and to our fellow church members. We recognize everyone has different financial resources and abilities to give, but we expect everyone to give it their best shot, and grow in their giving where they can as they grow in their relationship with Jesus.
